How did sunrise charity come to be?

Sometimes life drops blessings in your lap without your lifting a finger. Serendipity, they call it.
-Charlton Heston

_"I was on a holiday in Kenya near Mombasa and one evening while chatting to a local guy in a bar, I heard there was a village school that had recently opened and they were struggling a little. The next day, I went to investigate! I met with the principal Jane Matilda and her teachers and pupils then decided to try to help them as much as possible." _Philip Barton – Founder and chair of trustees.

Sunrise from its very beginnings...

The school was started in 2010 by Jane Katungwa who was the sole teacher of five children. Her father helped her build a small classroom on their land so she could start teaching them straight away. Most of the children she takes on have no source of income and the school has always depended on charity And the generosity of people around the community. The school now has 45 students from ages 3 to 13 years who receive free education, school trips and meals. With the help of this charity and community that surrounded the school has been able to grow Into a two classroom development. Children Can now be split into two groups according to their ages which makes it easier to teach and learn. We have very recently completed the third stage of the build that is doing all the electrics, sockets, plastering of walls and furniture. We have already started to fund raise to complete the fourth stage, first floor classroom extension and stairwell to be able to separate learning environments for all our pupils.

About

Our Mission

The aims of the charity are to advance the life opportunities, learning and education, social engagement and cross-cultural collaboration of students from the UK and Africa. As teachers and parents from a local community in Watford, Hertfordshire, we support dual communication channels which we have already developed with a local village community in Ukunda, Kenya so as to bring together our diverse communities to forge greater global awareness and partnerships for our children. We facilitate regular communication between our two communities and raise funds in order to help Sunrise Academy develop its skills and resources to the benefit of all its local Ukunda community.
